Eligibility
1. Composers seeking General or LDS commissions may apply
for either but not both, and should submit no more than one proposal to any program. The application deadline for receiving materials is June 1 of each calendar year. FAQs

2. Applications may be submitted by the composers, their agents, or performers committed to the premiere. There are no restrictions regarding musical style, nationality, age, gender, race, religion or political persuasion. The only limitations are 1) current members of the Barlow Boards are not eligible to apply; 2) Barlow Commission recipients will not be considered for a subsequent commissions until the previously commissioned work has been completed; and 3) Composers may not receive a Barlow Commission for two consecutive years. FAQs

3. The Endowment funds only the composer’s fee. Other costs must be funded through alternative sources. FAQs

Application Procedures
4. Applications must include a letter from the performer, or an ensemble representative, affirming a commitment to perform the proposed work. The composer should never be the signatory on this letter. This letter should be submitted with the application--not separately. In this supporting letter, one person from any of the performing entities may represent all performers. That representative will co-sign the contract with the composer. FAQs

5. Manuscripts submitted in support of the application should be of professional quality. The application and supporting materials should include a resume of compositional activity and exactly two recent representative scores. One of these scores must be no more than five years old. At least one score must demonstrate the composer’s ability to write for the genre for which they are applying. FAQs

6. Scores with recordings are considered extremely helpful in the judging process. For ease of handling, judges urge composers to burn a single CD containing both submitted works, and to use multiple tracks for multi-movement works. Be certain CD cases list detailed track information. The judging panel will not be able to review cassette tapes, MP3, DVD, video, or DAT formats. Please do not send items in these formats. FAQs

Judging
7. Commission decisions are usually made in August by the Barlow Endowment Board of Advisors. Commissioned composers will be notified before September 15, 2010.

8. The Barlow Endowment commissions composers who expect the premiere performance to occur no sooner than January 1st immediately following the commission.

Deadlines
9. The application deadline for receiving materials is June 1 of each calendar year. FAQs
